German firm MOTOR Ai raises $20M to accelerate certified autonomous driving in Europe

Berlin-based autotech startup MOTOR Ai, developer of certified Level 4 autonomous driving technology, has raised $20 million in a seed funding round to fully deploy its neuroscience-driven system on public roads in Germany.

  • Founded in 2017, MOTOR Ai develops certified Level 4 and 5 autonomous driving technology based on cognitive neuroscience.
  • The system uses sensor fusion from LiDAR, radar, cameras, microphones, GPS, and ultrasound to perceive the environment accurately. It makes explainable decisions in complex traffic without relying on extensive training data.
  • MOTOR Ai’s technology is designed to meet European safety and legal requirements and aims to integrate autonomous vehicles into public transport networks, connecting urban and remote areas efficiently and safely.

"Europe is setting a global benchmark for how autonomy should be built: explainable, trustworthy, and compliant. MOTOR Ai is proud to be building the infrastructure that meets this challenge head-on," MOTOR Ai's team, commented on LinkedIn.

Details of the deal

  • The investment was led by Frankfurt-based VC firm Segenia Capital, which has supported tech companies across Europe and Silicon Valley since 2019, alongside eCAPITAL and mobility-focused angel investors.

"This ‘Made in Germany’ in-house development reduces inter-dependencies while strengthening Europe’s ability to operate in critical innovative technology," claims Lucas Merle, Principal at eCAPITAL.

  • MOTOR Ai will use the $20 million to finalize certification for public road use and start deploying its autonomous vehicles on German streets in 2025, with safety drivers monitoring initially and being phased out by 2026.
