Gothenburg-based startup Adsorbi raises €1M for cellulose-based air purification pilot plant

Gothenburg-based startup Adsorbi, which creates sustainable materials to capture air pollutants, has raised €1 million to build and operate a pilot plant, with support from Metsä Spring, Chalmers Ventures, and Jovitech Invest.

  • Founded in 2022 by Kinga Grenda and Hanna Johansson, Adsorbi develops cellulose-based materials from Nordic forests to capture gaseous air pollutants like nitrogen oxides, acids, and aldehydes. Their materials are used in air filters, odour removal products, and museum preservation.
  • The company states that its cellulose-based materials generate 50% lower CO₂ emissions (3.5 kg CO₂ per kg) compared to activated carbon (7.5 kg CO₂ per kg), providing a more energy-efficient alternative.
  • In August 2024, the startup secured €360,000 in seed funding from Metsä Spring, Chalmers Ventures, and Jovitech Invest to advance product development, sales, and field testing.

Details of the deal

  • The round came from Espoo-based investment management firm Metsä Spring, Chalmers Ventures, a venture capital firm that supports tech startups across the Nordic region, Jovitech Invest, and a grant from Sweden’s Innovation Agency.

“We joined Adsorbi’s journey 1.5 years ago. The company has achieved all the goals agreed upon at the time and even surprised us investors positively in a few areas. With Adsorbi in our portfolio, we move closer to replacing fossil-based materials in everyday applications," claims Niklas von Weymarn, CEO of Metsä Spring.

  • The capital raised will enable the startup to construct and operate a pilot plant in Gothenburg, develop new products, and expand its customer base.

"We’re grateful to our investors for their continued support. With the funding, we will establish pilot production, a crucial step for scaling Adsorbi. we’re ready to offer a commercial solution that ensures the air we breathe is clean without extensive use of fossil-based materials,” CEO of Adsorbi, Hanna Johansson, commented.
