UK-based biotech startup ScienceMachine raises $3.5M pre-seed round

London-based biotech startup ScienceMachine, which builds autonomous AI tools to accelerate and automate biotech research and data analysis, has raised a $3.5 million pre-seed round led by Revent and Nucleus Capital.

  • Established in 2024 by Lorenzo Sani and Benjamin Tenmann, ScienceMachine is a biotech startup that develops autonomous AI systems for biomedical data analysis.
  • Their flagship product, Sam, is an agent-based AI bioinformatician that automates the entire data processing pipeline, from cleaning and structuring to statistical analysis and visualization.
  • With an office in San Francisco, Sam integrates seamlessly with research teams’ existing workflows and databases, processing raw experimental data independently. It identifies differentially expressed genes, uncovers patterns, and generates visual insights that would normally require a full team of data scientists.

Details of the deal

  • The pre-seed round was led by Berlin-based VC firm Revent and Nucleus Capital, a German venture capital firm focused on programmable biology, food technology, and green industrials, with participation from Juniper, Opal Ventures, and strategic angels.

ScienceMachine is one of the most impressive examples we’ve seen of pure execution. They’re perfectly positioned to disrupt one of the largest and most important markets in the world," explains Rebecca Brill, Principal at Revent.

  • ScienceMachine will use the funding to develop its AI product further, hire more staff, particularly in sales and pharma partnerships, and expand its customer base from biotech startups to larger companies that require scalable data automation.
