Finnish startup Tangled raises €3.8M to reinvent code collaboration

Helsinki-based Tangled is a social coding startup that helps developers collaborate and share code, and has raised €3.8 million in a seed funding round led by byFounders to accelerate its platform development and grow its global user community.

  • Founded in 2025 by Anirudh Oppiliappan and Akshay Oppiliappan, Tangled develops a next-generation, federated social coding platform. The platform enables developers to host, share, and collaboratively review code across interconnected servers while retaining full ownership of their code and identity.
  • Built on the AT Protocol, Tangled supports features like stacked pull requests, integrated continuous integration, and social discovery tools, allowing communities to self-govern and making collaborative software development more distributed, open, and social.
  • In its first year, Tangled reports that it has grown to thousands of users and thousands of repositories, positioning itself as foundational infrastructure for the next generation of open-source development.

"Our vision for Tangled has always been big: we want to build the best code forge ever, and become foundational infrastructure for the next generation of open source. Whatever that looks like: hundreds of devs building artisanal libraries, or one dev and a hundred agents building a micro-SaaS," claims Anirudh Oppiliappan, co-founder of Tangled.

Details of the deal

  • The €3.8 million seed round was led by byFounders, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto and Antler, alongside angel investors including Thomas Dohmke, Avery Pennarun, and Mårten Mickos.

“The bottleneck in software development has shifted from writing code to reviewing and managing it at scale. We backed Tangled because the team has the technical depth to build a system that manages this complexity for both humans and AI. This is a critical piece of infrastructure for the European tech ecosystem, providing a native alternative to American legacy platforms," explains Jussi Kallasvuo, Partner at Antler.

  • The fresh capital will be used to accelerate Tangled’s product and infrastructure roadmap in 2026, including a revamped micro-VM–based CI (Spindle v2), protocol-level features like repo migrations and organizations, a customizable developer dashboard, GitHub migration tooling, advanced code and repo search, global performance improvements, and the launch of the Tangled CLI.
