Sortrace raises $800k to improve waste sorting with AI-powered analysis

Stockholm-based Sortrace, a company developing AI-powered waste analysis technology, has raised $800,000 in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round led by Almi Invest, with participation from Antler, Gorilla Capital, Linnéa Capital and several business angels.

  • Founded in 2025 by Rahel Surshi and Tomas Kjellstrand, Sortrace develops technology that combines computer vision, camera sensors and data analytics to help municipalities and waste management companies monitor household waste sorting and identify incorrect disposal practices.
  • The company's technology uses cameras installed on waste collection vehicles to analyse waste as bins are emptied.
  • Its AI-powered system identifies waste contents and converts images into structured data, helping municipalities understand where sorting mistakes occur and assess the effectiveness of their recycling initiatives.

Details of the deal

  • With the fresh capital, the firm aims to expand its team, increase installations and further develop its technology, while exploring applications beyond waste collection vehicles and across other stages of the waste management chain.
