Nuclear Turbines emerges from stealth with £15M funding to reinvent nuclear energy economics

Manchester-based firm Nuclear Turbines has secured £15 million in funding led by IQ Capital, with participation from Rhapsody Venture Partners, Zero Carbon Capital, and Empirical Ventures, alongside continued support from BAE Systems.

  • Founded in 2024 by Jeremy Owston and Tim Abram, Nuclear Turbines is a nuclear energy startup developing compact nuclear power systems that combine advanced modular reactors with gas turbine technology to generate cheaper and more reliable electricity.
  • The company’s technology uses a reactor to directly heat compressed air, which is then fed into a gas turbine to produce electricity.
  • By replacing traditional steam-based nuclear systems with a gas turbine approach, Nuclear Turbines aims to build smaller, modular, and more cost-efficient nuclear power solutions for industrial sites, data centres, and other energy-intensive applications.

Details of the deal

  • The startup plans to use the funding to advance its reactor technology, build large-scale test facilities, and expand its team as it works toward bringing its compact nuclear power system to market.
