Valencia-based molecular diagnostics startup iPremom has raised €15 million in a seed funding round led by Amadeus Capital Partners through the Amadeus APEX Technology Fund, with participation from Asabys Partners and APEX Ventures, as Vestbee was informed.
- Founded in 2019 by Carlos Simón and Dr Tamara Garrido, iPremom is developing molecular diagnostics for the early prediction of pregnancy complications. Its MaiRa platform uses a blood test to analyse cell-free RNA (cfRNA) signals from the first trimester and assess the risk of complications such as preeclampsia before symptoms appear.
- The platform is based on more than a decade of research and has been developed using data from more than 26,000 samples linked to 10,000 pregnancies from the PREMOM prospective clinical study.
"Pregnancy complications have been under-diagnosed and under-treated for generations, because the field was looking in the wrong place at the wrong time. Our ambition is not just to build a better preeclampsia test, it is to give every pregnant woman a comprehensive, early molecular picture of her pregnancy," explains Professor Carlos Simón, co-founder and Chairman of iPremom.
Details of the deal
- iPremom will use the funding to complete clinical validation studies, expand the commercial availability of MaiRa, and pursue regulatory approvals in the EU and US. The platform is already available in Spain through the company’s laboratory.
- Preeclampsia affects an estimated 5% to 8% of pregnancies globally, while existing diagnostic approaches often detect risk only after complications have started to develop. iPremom aims to enable earlier intervention by providing clinicians with a molecular risk assessment from the first trimester.
