Austria's deeptech startup fibionic has raised €3 million in a seed round led by Redstone, with participation from Euregio Plus SGR S.p.A. / AG, caesar., LEAP4, and several angel investors.
- Launched in 2020 by Johannes Mandler, Thomas Rettenwander, and Elias Hirschbichler, fibionic develops bionically inspired manufacturing technology for lightweight composite components.
- The company’s patented fibionic fiber placement (FFP) process calculates and applies reinforcing fibers along optimal load paths, mimicking structures found in nature such as insect wings. Using finite-element-based simulations, fibionic determines the ideal fiber architecture for a component and produces functional prototypes in minimal time.
- The process supports both prototyping and large-scale production, with cycle times of less than a minute per component, while reducing material usage, component weight, and environmental impact.

Details of the deal
- fibionic plans to use the €3 million to expand its industrial processes, further develop its fibionic fiber placement technology, hire additional engineering and business development staff, advance pilot projects into full-scale production, and strengthen its ecosystem of simulation, equipment, materials, licensing, and software tools to support more efficient and sustainable composite manufacturing.
