VC & Startup weekly news from CEE, March 2-8, 2024

Notable funding rounds across the EU:

  • The UK’s largest digital bank, Monzo, has raised £340 million investment led by CapitaIG. Google Ventures and HongShan Capital, as well as existing backers, including Passion Capital and Tencent, also participated.
  • Amsterdam-based hospitality management system Mews has secured €101 million in a round led by existing investor Kinnevik, alongside Revaia, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Notion Capital and new investor LGVP.
  • Paris-based open source cryptography company Zama has closed a $73 million Series A round. The investment is led by Multicoin Capital and Protocol Labs, with participation from Metaplanet, Blockchange Ventures, VSquared, and Stake Capital.
  • The UK Video-generative AI platform Haiper has raised a $13.8 million seed round led by Octopus Ventures.
  • German Direct Air Capture startup Greenlyte Carbon Technologies (GCT) has closed a €10.5 million pre-Series A round. Investors include Earlybird Venture Capital, Green Generation Fund, Carbon Removal Partners.
  • Swedish clinical-stage biotech company Cellcolabs has raised $8.7 million from Norrsken VC and business angels.
  • Fluent, a data analytics platform transforming the way decision-makers access and use business data, has closed a €6.9 million seed investment round led by Hoxton Ventures and Tiferes Ventures.
  • Cambridge-based deeptech startup Theia Insights has raised $6.5 million funding led by Silicon Valley’s Unusual Ventures, with participation from Fidelity International Strategic Ventures and LA-based Clocktower Ventures.

New venture funds and VCs’ news:

  • Amsterdam-based climate fund investing platform Carbon Equity has raised €100 million through its Climate Tech Portfolio Fund II. It will invest in 7 to 10 selected private equity and venture capital funds and indirectly in 150 to 200 critical climate solutions.
  • Nordic Science Investments (NSI) of Finland has completed the initial funding round for its €60 million fund. This capital will be dedicated to fostering the growth and development of deeptech spin-out startups emerging from universities across the Nordic region.

CEE startup funding rounds & acquisitions:

  • Slovak medical device manufacturer Powerful Medical has got a €2.5 million grant and a follow-on €5 million investment from the European Innovation Council (EIC).
  • Polish B2B CRM platform provider Livespace has raised over €2 million (PLN 10 million) from INventures and ARIA Fund.
  • Rayscape, a Timisoara-based provider of a digital assistant for radiologists, has raised an investment of $500,000 via Rubik Garage Accelerator from Fortech Investments.
  • Lakmoos, a Czech provider of instant market research, has raised €300,000 in a pre-seed round from Presto Ventures.
  • Vinted, Lithuania’s unicorn that develops a C2C marketplace for second-hand items, has acquired its Danish counterpart, Trendsales. The conditions of the deal are not disclosed.

Startups calls & Events:

  • In celebration of its 10th birthday, Impact Hub Belgrade has announced the Western Balkan Spring Demo Day 2024. The event invites green, inclusive, or tech startups with a female founder and an MVP that are seeking early-stage investments. Selected startups will have the opportunity to win €1,000 provided by Deel and showcase their ideas in front of jury members, investors, mentors, and stakeholders, gaining valuable feedback from the Impact Hub Global Network.
