UK healthtech firm IVFmicro secures £3.5M to boost IVF success rates and make it more accessible

Leeds-based startup IVFmicro, which develops microfluidic tools to improve IVF success, has raised £3.5 million in pre-seed funding led by Northern Gritstone.

  • Founded in 2017 by Virginia Pensabene and Helen Picton, IVFmicro is a research-focused spinout from the University of Leeds that develops microfluidic systems for assisted reproduction technologies (ART).
  • The company designs tools and methods aimed at improving in vitro embryo culture, making the process safer, simpler, and more reliable to increase the quality and number of embryos produced per cycle.
  • IVFmicro’s core technology uses microfluidic devices that handle very small volumes of nutrient-rich fluid to support embryo growth. By precisely controlling the culture environment and reducing manual handling, the system improves embryo viability and consistency.
  • The devices are intended for use in human IVF treatments as well as in research with laboratory, domestic, and exotic species. The technology is designed to integrate into existing ART workflows, enabling more predictable outcomes while maintaining high standards of embryo safety and development.

Details of the deal

  • Northern Gritstone, an independent investment company in the North of England that supports innovative teams and university spinouts with a “profit with purpose” approach, led the round with support from the Innovate UK Investor Partnerships Programme.

"IVFMicro is a brilliant example of the world-class innovation emerging from the Northern Arc’s universities, combining scientific excellence with a clear commercial vision to tackle the societal challenge of infertility. We are especially proud that IVFMicro’s journey has been supported through our NG Studios programme and our Innovation Services, which exist to help founders like Virginia and Helen turn pioneering research into real-world impact," explains Duncan Johnson, CEO of Northern Gritstone.

  • IVFmicro plans to use the new £3.5 million funding to support its next verification and validation phase, which will prepare the company for trials involving human embryos in fertility clinics. This step is crucial before their technology can be widely used in IVF treatments.
